TV critics say that the sitcom is dead. If that's the case, Tina Fey's 30 Rock may the industry's last gasp for greatness before its demise. The show has received countless awards and critical accolades, but has failed to find a big audience.
This is even more tragic when you consider just how good 30 Rock is. It's a genuinely smart show.
The show consistently ranks low--102 out of 142 television series according to the Nielsen Ratings. Yet it has received many nominations and awards. Among them are the Peabody Award and the Best Comedy Series from The Writers Guild of America, as well as the 2007 and 2008 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Fey is extremely enjoyable, playing a variation on herself-a head comedy writer for a TV show, with a cavalcade of hilarious characters surrounding her. None is more amusing than Alec Baldwin's characterization of her GE boss that seems to represent all that's wrong with big business, while making you like him at the same time.
Many shows manage to become hits if they're held onto long enough-Seinfeld being a perfect example. With 30 Rock returning this season for the third time, NBC is certainly holding out hope that its critically acclaimed darling will follow suit.
Fey has been winning lots of fans with her recent appearances on "Saturday Night Live," playing the charming, but folksy Sarah Palin. High ratings for SNL have made NBC hopeful that there will be carry-over to Fey's show.
I hope that it does. I love 30 Rock and would love to see many more episodes and seasons. Unfortunately, too many "smart shows" get cancelled before their prime. It would be tragic if 30 Rock found itself in this category.
You will find complete episodes and downloads available through the "NBC Direct" service (Americans only). It's also available again on Apple's iTunes. I've also found many of all three seasons episodes and clips on Hulu.com. com. Enjoy.
