When Your T-Shirt Talks, Everybody Listens

By Simone Therabeault

Your t-shirt called. It wants its voice back. Yes, the tees of today aren't satisfied with being just a simple color-coordinated fit to your ensemble. The modern tee wants to be seen and heard.

More daring than anything in the past, today's graphic tees range from the rude to the downright raunchy. They entertain us, they offend us, they challenge our perceptions, all while providing insight into their owners' minds like never before.

A humorous or rude t-shirt can evoke laughter from classmates or sneers from strangers, but what it tells others about yourself is often more revealing.

Ever wonder why you see so many of these funny tees featured in films lately? Rather than waste countless pages of a script trying to develop a character, writers smartly discovered that simply putting an actor in the right shirt can tell us exactly what kind of guy he is.

Really, you'd be hard pressed to find a cult-classic or modern college flick that doesn't feature a main character wearing a tee with a cool catchphrase in a few scenes.

Some of these crazy shirts reference the wearer's sexual philosophy (e.g. "Hit it and Quit it"), while other tees make subtle cultural statements about the meaning of marriage (See: Game Over). The common thread in all of these funny or offensive t-shirts is that they get the message across without saying a word.

Call it a trend. Call it a geek's revenge. Whatever it is, it's the hottest new anti-fashion movement. And like Heidi says, if you're not in, you're out.

Today, the only thing a person really needs to do to establish their irrefutable coolness is publicly walk around wearing the right tee with pride.

It's advertising at its best. Only this time, your sense of humor is what you're branding. That, and your awesomeness, of course.

With the right t-shirt, you can show total strangers just how clever and confident you are. Things about your personality that were once hidden and opaque to the world, ironically become more transparent with each comfy layer of cotton. That is the magic of a really good t-shirt.

The world wants to see the real you. Show your true colors by buying a t-shirt that aptly displays your weird, wicked or wild sense of humor.
