In Sydney, there is a feeding frenzy of sorts going on at the moment. There has been a mad dash for wide screen TVs which are digital ready, as well as for home theater systems as Australia continues to modernize on the back of a very healthy economy. Many companies are out there who would love to sell you one of these expensive systems - and they will do what it takes to sell you they best system they have,
But you should not be fooled by most of them.
First off, most of the retailers are really selling just about identical systems. They may have different casings and a different name but there are only so many of these high quality home theatre systems made. There isn't any retailer who knows some secret, magical system that only they can get for you.
Also, these shops pay their sales personnel on a commission basis, meaning that hey are more occupied with the size of their paycheck than they are with selling you a home theater system which actually meets your needs.
Even worse, they usually won't install the system for you either. They most likely are not terribly concerned with any idiosyncrasies of your home in regards to the installation of a home theater system, in fact and are simply focused on selling you the most expensive system in the store, or which ever system they need to reduce stock of. It is exceedingly unlikely that you will ever be asked about the wiring in your home or the physical setup of the room in which it will be placed.
These systems are typically the most elaborate, they have the most wires to run, the most remote controls to coordinate and program, the most components. The more complex the home theatre system looks, the more the buyer thinks it must have more features and benefits, and the more the sales rep plays upon that perception to sell the system.
YOU will have a terrible time trying to put this system together yourself in your home, and it will drive you nuts trying to separate all those wires, put them in the right places, and keep them from getting tangled or being an eyesore. And good luck and pack a lunch as you try to get the remotes correctly coordinated. Hook something up wrong and you may even damage your system and that won't be covered by the flimsy warranty.
At best, you may get a referral to a service provider from the retailer. This service provider will come out to your home and install the home theater system for you - for a hefty price. This fee is of course not included in the price of the system itself.
Even worse, if the service provider can't do the job right the seller can't solve that problem. If the system is not right for your home, the service provider can't solve that problem. If both things are wrong, the only loser is YOU.
You would be best served by going to a home theater electronics specialist. You can save a lot of time and money this way, not to mention hassle.
An independent electronics consultant can be of great help to you here - they will work with you to figure out what you want in a home theater system and how this will integrate into your home. They will then install the system for you and their service is backed by a guarantee.
Don't even consider buying a home theatre entertainment system until you have met with one of these consultants.
