Decorations for Baby Showers

By Charmaine L. Smoot

Need a guaranteed way to make your shower unforgettable? Why not set the mood from the moment your shower guests arrive with memorable decorations?! Fun and beautiful decor create excitement and set the tone of the event, and the secret to succeeding with decorations is simple: choosing a theme. After you set a theme, the other parts of your baby shower will fall together into a cohesive whole: color, general decorations, wall decor, table decor, and, everyone's favorite item, food.

The Theme

The limitless possibilities for a theme mean any size budget can sustain a successful baby shower. Open your mind and let your imagination guide you while staying grounded by your wallet. Here are a few ideas:

- Nursery Rhymes - A classic theme everyone can relate to.

- Tea Party

- Disney Characters - We all have fond memories of our Disney pals!

- Diaper Party - Use diaper-shaped invites, decor, and gifts of diaper packets!

- Stuffed Animals

- Barefoot and Pregnant - Is the expectant mother the first one in her group to have a child? Let her know everyone's behind her by asking guests to come to a "Barefoot and Pregnant Party" dressed in stuffed shirts to signify their "pregnancy" (yes, even the male guests!).

Color

Let your chosen theme help you select the color for the shower. What if your theme is color-independent? Then you can always fall back on the old stand-by of allowing blue to signify an expected boy, pink for a girl, or either yellow or green when the baby's sex isn't known. White has also emerged as a popular baby shower color to symbolize innocence and purity. Whatever color or colors you decide on, let them help to unify the other elements of your shower.

General Decor

Whatever theme you choose, there are items almost every baby shower should have. Balloons, streamers, and banners set a festive tone, and displaying balloons in front of the house will also help guests identify the location of the baby shower.

There's no better way to remind all the guests of the real reason for the get-together than by having a completely "done" baby crib near the entrance to the party. Then, not only is the tone for the event set perfectly, but the baby crib can also be used as a stunning gift table.

Table Decor

Finding great ways to dress a table for your shower is super easy. How about a baby-themed tablecloth with matching disposable napkins? You can use baby cloth diapers as placemats. Themed centerpieces are also popular baby shower decorations. To make a unique one, use stuffed animals holding small baskets filled with favors. Easy and fun!

To further add to the shower's light-hearted fun, have diapers decorated and hung with clothespins on clothes line. Put a stork outside the host's home to greet guests. Have napkin holders made from baby bracelets. Or how about cookies in baby or animal shapes? A favorite is to have a diaper cake... no, not a baked cake in the shape of square diapers, but a tower of diapers assembled in the shape of a traditional cake! And of course, fresh-cut flowers in the color of the theme are always a welcome addition to the party.

To "polish" the look and feel of your party, make sure you have matching tableware. Coordinating plates, cups, spoons, forks, and napkins go a long way toward establishing the theme of the festivities, and these supplies can be easily found in most party stores. For the tablecloth, white is the most classic color for it, and you can easily jazz it up for the occasion by sprinkling animal- or baby-shaped confetti on it.

Food

Whether you prefer home-made or store-bought, having plenty of yummy food for guests is always the right choice. Need some ideas? How about a white layer cake, chocolate candies, macaroons, yogurt-covered raisins, marshmallows, or chocolate-covered nuts? They're all fun items that can be bought at the local grocery store. Try serving milk in clear, plastic baby bottles. What about vanilla ice cream instead? Food party favors are always a hit, too, as they give them a steady supply of goodies to snack on while gifts are being opened. Try white chocolate-covered almonds served in white baby booties and tied together with a white satin ribbon.

There are many fun-filled and creative ways to decorate a baby shower. An imaginative host will enjoy this occasion to honor the expectant mother and to hone her creative skills. Have fun!
