Men have always loved working with wood ever since the dawn of time. It has been used for a number of different purposes. The only thing which has really changed is that we now have more sophisticated tools to help us. All of the basic concepts such as sawing, drilling and shaping have remained largely unchanged. It is however much quicker because of the advancements in technology.
Three vital pieces of machinery which you need
There are some pieces of machinery which just speed up the job, but there are others which are absolutely essential. These three pieces are vital.
Circular Saw
You can either use a circular handheld or table saw which is very useful for making precision cuts. It can also be used for making long cuts. Hand saws can be used to make very accurate curved cuts, and can be used in other materials other than just wood.
Router
Routers can make your woodwork project more professional looking. Using a table based router makes this much easier. Purchasing one with a guide allows you to accurate cut the wood without making mistakes. If the table is adjustable then it allows you to work in some very intricate details.
Jig Saw
Jig Saws are extremely useful to create smaller pieces with a greater level of detail. These are used to create intricate designs, toys and even decorations. Of course you could also make a jigsaw!
There are many different pieces of woodworking machinery which you should consider purchasing, however only serious wood workers will actually need these. Most novices will start with the tools above and then slowly expand their collection.
One of the easiest beginner projects is to simply install wood moldings. Crown moldings are fairly cheap and you get to learn about cutting wood at a miter. You can even buy premade corner pieces which make this project very easy. If using these corner pieces then you only really need to use a standard saw. A nail gun is also another useful addition to your toolkit, especially one powered by a portable air compressor.
Timeless Tools of the Trade
Hand tools haven't really changed a whole lot for centuries, the chisel has been around for thousands of years and is still useful today. Buying a good quality set of chisels is certainly a good investment, you can be sure that these will almost certainly never need to be replaced! A router is all well and good, however it hasn't changed how important chisels are.
You will also need a set of squares so that you can keep everything in square when you are fixing cabinets away. Squares make sure that everything is right.
The best solution is to buy some traditional tools alongside a few power tools. This will create a very powerful toolkit.
