Liberal and classical liberal are two very different things. Being the latter, I find it difficult to stomach anything that comes out of Hollywood with a political spin. That spin is almost always skewed towards the left. That's why I was surprised with seeing David Zucker's "An American Carol." This is a rare conservative film that presents a positive spin to the America much of the world has come to hate!
The film uses humor to broach several highly charged political issues, including healthcare, the war of terrorism, and the clash of civilizations between Islam and the West.
Michael Moore's documentary, "Sicko", was an extremely contentious critique on the American healthcare system, going so far as to compare it to Cuba's Communist model...according to Moore's radical logic the Communist system scored superior compared to ours! "An American Carol" begins with a spoof on "Sicko", showing a smug "Malone" (Moore's double) strolling past long lines of "common people" awaiting care, empty lines for "party officials," and well-armed soldiers keeping order. The scene finale shows a mad rush of Cubans fighting each other to get aboard a far-too-small boat to flee the country. The take-away: let's not forget that Cubans routinely flee for America and there's a reason for that!
The next scene shows a spoof on a group of incompetent Islamic jihadists plotting to kill a crowd of Afghan civilians lining up to vote. Despite the humor, this is the reality that Afghans were forced to suffer under the Taliban regime. The movie's jihadists then come to the hilarious decision to use American liberal media to produce an anti-American terrorist training video. Zucker does a great job reminding us that there's a reason we went to war (at least in Afghanistan!), and whether or not we wish to acknowledge it, Islamic radicals will continue to plot the murder of Americans.
The clincher for me was when a Rosie O'Donnell character rises to the defense of Islam, showing a made-up video of "radical Christians," arguing that they are just as much a threat to the West. The scene had me on the floor cracking up as nuns detonated bombs on public buses and priests hijacked airplanes. The stark reality highlighted here is that despite political correctness, we are at war with radical Islamic jihadists who use terror indescriminantly on civilian targets. Let me make that as clear did Zucker: the reason we take off our shoes and cannot bring water through airport checkpoints has nothing to do with Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, or pagan terrorists...they are Islamic and they have devoted their lives to the conquest of the West.
For once Hollywood is telling us that we should be proud to be American, our healthcare system is better than Socialist alternatives, and we have legitimate reason to fight Islamic jihadists. Crazy, eh? I bet the cast and crew of this story weren?t on the Obama guest list!
