Acid Glass Etching - The Unique Art Form

By Ales Lombergar

Acid glass etching is a form of art that is getting depleted these days. This form of art is one of a kind and has some effects which resemble sand blasting. Acid glass etching and sand blasting are two different forms of art. Acid glass etching includes various watered down techniques and they are used till today. Only few artists go with the traditional form of acid glass etching is really dangerous.

This form of art evolved many centuries back especially during the Victorian times. The artistic work may be seen in the mirrors and the windows in the pub during the ages of Victoria. Acid glass etching was mainly used to decorate and add colors to the mirrors. A wax stencil was used in the process of acid glass etching and they were kept in the places of mirror that should not be exposed to the acid. Though hydrofluoric acids are harmful to human, artists continued using them as they proved to be the best of all acids. Fumes released on dipping the mirror into the acid are really dangerous. Also when the acid falls on the part of the artists body, the skin and the tissue may get dissolved. It may also result in the loss of fingers and hands due to this acid.

Now in the modern era many new techniques are introduced. Chemical creams and solutions are used for glass etching. When compared to Hydrofluoric acid these solutions are very cheaper and they serve better to produce their masterpiece. These solutions and creams are not harmful and they never create side effects to the artists. Thus they can do their work without fear.

As the finished product is similar in the case of sand blasting or sand abrasive etching to acid glass Etching, many people start comparing the two methods. But they are not the same. Artists use sand blasting to carve the mirror or glass but it is not possible with the acid glass Etching. Time cannot be saved in sand blasting and it involves many equipments to perform. Currently many artists don't prefer to use hydrofluoric acids and they opt for creams and solutions. So the work can be a bit hard and there is every chance for an error to happen. Chemicals used are not strong enough and the work may dry up when compared to other methods like sand blasting and acid blasting. A process of streaking and splotching has to be done if the work is not finished properly. Various techniques can be used with the sand abrasive Etching whereas chemical glass Etching cannot be handled with different techniques and it is restricted to acid.

Acid glass Etching are used by very few artists as it involves lot of risks to the human life as the techniques involved in it are very hazardous. It is the main reason that artists don't prefer this type of art. It is very difficult for these modern art techniques to replace this splendid art that created a great influence among the people during the Victorian times.
