In case you haven't noticed, retailers, even giants, are "going green". It was bound to happen and it is a welcome change. Of course the Wal-marts, Targets and Sams Clubs of the world, most likely, will never go fully earth-friendly, and merely offer sections in their stores rather than become another Whole Foods, it is still a very good sign.

Why? The obvious part is that anything one person or a group of people do, in even a small way, to leave shorter "carbon footprints", the better. The signs of a "planet in trouble" have been with us for awhile. It is nothing new. Today, one does not need to be what was commonly referred to as a "tree-hugger" to do their part in pitching in to help in their own small way to help the earth, hence us, live longer and healthier.

I am an Internet retailer that deals in humor gifts and collectibles. I sell licensed images of my cartoon images on a myriad of products such as Tshirts, mouse pads, coffee mugs, and others. When I told my friends I was planning to open a 100% organic cotton (using nontoxic dyes) T-shirt shop as my latest online venture, a good many of them laughed. And not at my cartoons. Some felt I was "losing it". The truth is, I am finding it. Though I don't know if I will ever become fully green in my entrepreneurial pursuits, that is my goal. I still have a number of existing customers at other eshops who have supported us all these years, and they are a completely different market. My strategy is not to abandon them, but to cater to them, and slowly add more green products that I know many will try, and as time goes by, hopefully, go fully eco-friendly in all the stores.

I would have considered it a negative, given the opportunity to get into the "green sector" of business, not to have taken it. And finally I did. Actually, I had been attempting this for years, but I could not strike a deal with a manufacturer that suited me. I wanted to find one in which I could provide an extremely high quality fabric, and have my cartoon images imprinted with natural dyes that would not harm the skin. Easier said than done. There were a few our but there was always an issue or minimal purchases, quality control, and the like. It was "always somethin'" as Gilda used to say.

I know I do. We also are health-conscious people these days. We try to eat healthier foods, take organic vitamins, eat less red meat, consume less trans-fat. The skin is the largest and most absorbent organ the body has. Wearing non-toxic dye tees is smart. And wearing premium ones, paying about $5-6 more than one would for a regular cotton or cotton blend tee is even smarter. It looks sexier. It feels better. And one is doing their part to help the planet a little. To me, that kind of peace of mind is worth a lot more than a McDonald's Happy Meal.

Bump up the Volume: Wish you could rock out a little louder? Check out the Volume Limit option on the Settings menu. Use this option to dial your iPod's maximum volume up or down. You can also adjust the sound style from the EQ (equalizer) menu.

Simple Step Glass Ball Tutorial

Step 1 - With the circular marquee tool, create a simple circle in any color. We will use red in this example.

Step 2 - Give the circle an inner-glow layer effect by changing the glow color to black and changing the blend mode to multiply. Using an inner shadow can result in an angular deflection which is why we use the inner glow method for uniformity.

Step 3 - Load the selection from the circular area. Drag the linear gradient (white to transparent) downward from the top making sure it is close but not completely at the bottom in a new layer.

Step 4) To transform the white gradient, press Ctrl/Cmd+T. Drag the handles bringing it upwards going halfway through, and drag it just a small amount inward from the top and sides. Now to create a merge composite layer: Hide the background. Create a new blank layer on top and press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+E or Option+Cmd+Shift+E on Mac, to create a merged layer on top.

Step 5 - Taking this merged layer, make a circular selection above larger than the original circle. Use your judgment on what looks right and then copy the section and paste it into a new layer. Now the top segment of the orb is done. Place it again in the exact position.

Step 6 - For the base of the orb,create an elliptical shape fitting in to the lower half of the circle within a new layer. Duplicate this layer while reducing the size marginally.

Step 7) Choose the larger ellipse layer, pressing Ctrl/Cmd and clicking on the layer thumbnail to load its selection. Now drag across in the grey-white-grey-white-grey color combination with the cylindrical gradient tool.

Step 8. Duplicate this layer too and bring the duplicate upwards, as shown. Now place the white small portion up above the actual gradiated layer. Place it as shown in fig.8. Link both layers and reduce their size by a bit, so that the outer gradiated ellipse is just a bit within the red circle.

Step 9. Take the duplicated gradient layer and again select it , now giving it a slightly different gradient of greys and whites. Now bring the duplicated gradient layer down. arrange it beneath both the other layers, and position as shown in fig.9. It should be a visible from both sides as it is the rim of the orb.

Step 10. Now to remove the portions of the orb that aren't required. As before by keeping Ctrl/Cmd pressed and clicking on the layer thumbnails; first select the large outer rim elipse (with the gray gradient) and then Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+Click on the thumbnail of the the upper top portion layer (created in step 5). You will now have the 2 ellipses selected. We want to also select the bottom portion of the orb. Choose the Rectangular marquee tool hold down shift and drag over the bottom portion. Inverse the selection (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I) and delete the middle portion of the orb. The figure should look as it is in Fig.10.

Step 11 -Now to create the glass portion. Create a circle of the same size of the orb in any color and position it behind the other layers.

Step 12 -As with the first outer orb, give this circle the same inner-glow effect, bringing it forward to cover all but the red outer sections of the orb.

Step 13. Now goto the layer palette and make the fill amount =0. This makes the layer invisible, but keeps the layer effects visible, as shown in Fig.13.

Step 14. As you had done with the red circle, ie, creating a white gradient reflection, create the same in a new layer above the glass layer, so as to create a more realistic lighting effect. Adjust the settings as required to make it as realistic looking as possible.

Step 15 -Select the base layers, which are the grey metal gradient layers and the white ellipse, merging them together. Press Cntrl+U to fine-tune the hue of the layer. Since it is at this point grey, click on colorize, and convert to a reddish color to keep with the color of the orb itself.

Step 16 -Lastly, make a very small drop shadow to the upper piece of the red orb, in order to create more realism. The lower portion may seem off, so create a new layer above the red lower orb portion. Select the radial gradient tool in the white to nothing option and drag from a point over the red to just a bit inward. Erase parts that are not enclosed within the red portion.

You orb is ready. You can display any items in there now, just make sure any Items kept in have a good reflection added on. This will give the base a shiny appearance.

Framing Your Picture For Better Results

Framing your photograph can turn what would otherwise be a boring picture into a visually pleasing one. Often times an element in the foreground can be used to create the frame. Some examples of framing include using an overhanging tree branch, a window frame, a door, arches, a fence, rows of trees, etc.

Frames serve to isolate the main subject of your photograph and create an interesting composition. When framing your photograph it is oftentimes the feeling of depth you're after. At times you may decide to retain the detail of the frame (as in a wall, fence or branch), or let the frame go completely dark (as in a window frame).

When you are organizing a photo, look around the foreground (and sometimes, even middle or background) and find objects that can be used as a natural frame. At times you may need to physically back up a bit, kneel down for a more pleasant composition, or even zoom in to include your subject within the frame that you have chosen.

You can use image editing software to creating framing after the fact by combining two or more pictures. There are some very dramatic effects which can be accomplished this way and you are truly only limited by your imagination.

However, a word of caution is necessary here. Though there is nothing wrong with combining different images to create another one, be very careful about employing artificial frames on recognizable scenes and landscapes.

As an extreme example, don't frame the Statue of Liberty by the St. Louis Arch. Unless your purpose is to create dissonance within your viewers' minds, that picture will just look strange.

So, before you take that shot next time, look around and see if there is an object that you can use as a natural frame. Take a picture without the frame, and another one with the frame, and compare. Betcha, you'll like the one with the frame better!

What is Exposure in Photography Explained

Exposure of a photograph is a matter of how much light registers on the media (film or digital camera sensor) that collects that light. Proper exposure of a photograph depends on the three factors that control how much light is registered: ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Combining these three variables in the proper proportions will result in the proper exposure of photographs.

ISO is a measure of how sensitive the film or digital sensor is that is collecting the light. The lower the ISO number, the lower the sensitivity. The higher the ISO, the higher the sensitivity.

Aperture refers to the diameter of the diaphragm in the lens of the camera. Similiar in function to the pupil, the wider the diameter (or aperture) is, the more light can enter through the lens to be collected by the sensor. Because aperture is measured as a ratio of focal length of the lens to the diameter of the lens, the aperture setting is expressed as f/(aperture value). A setting of f/2.8 means that the focal length of the lens is 2.8 times the diameter of the diaphragm. The smaller the digits in the expression for aperture, the larger the diaphragm. The larger the number, as in f/8, the smaller the aperture.

Shutter speed is the easiest of the three variables to understand. It is as simple as it sounds. This is the amount of time that the shutter is open to collect light. The longer the shutter is opened, the more light is allowed to pass through the lens to be collected.

All three of these factors come with other benefits or drawbacks depending on how you look at it. These side effects can be put to creative use When fully understood and properly utilized.

Knowledgeable photographers understand the causes and effects of these factors and will set them before ever taking a picture. Usually, a photographer is concerned first with ISO. Higher ISO settings result in grainier images. For this reason most photographers normally keep ISO settings as low as possible. Even though noise and film grain are usually unwanted, sometimes they are used to achieve this effect in the image.

Changing the opening in the diameter of the diaphragm changes how much light passes through the lens and onto the light catching media whether it is film or a digital sensor. When changing the aperture the focus in the image captured is also changed. Smaller apertures such as f/8 and f/16 will result in more area in focus between foreground and background. Called depth of field, this is very important in the capturing of an image. Bigger apertures like f/1.8 and f2.8 narrow the depth of field so that most everything in the final picture will out of focus. This helps to highlight the subject in a dramatic way by leaving the subject in focus while distracting foreground and backgrounds remain out of focus.

Shutter speed regulates how much light passes through the lens by varying how long the shutter is open. Obviously, the longer the shutter is open the more light will pass through the lens on it's way to the film or sensor and vice versa. The side effect of shutter speed is motion blur or lack of. The longer the shutter is open the more the apparent moving parts of the image will blur. Blurring moving subjects or even the entire image using slow shutter speeds can be put to creative use and it often is. Other times a fast shutter speed is required when "freezing" a subject is the desired result.

When these three variables are set properly, a properly exposed image will result. Once set properly, a change in one of the variables will require a change in at least one of the other variables to compensate. This is because changing only one of the variables will increase or decrease the amount of light that lands on the film or sensor or affect the sensitivity of that film or sensor. Increasing the sensitivity, or ISO, of the sensor or film will result in an overexposed photograph if the light landing on that sensor or film is not reduced by increasing the shutter speed or decreasing the aperture. Increasing the shutter speed to freeze a rodeo rider will result in an underexposed photograph unless the size of the aperture is increased to allow more light in or the ISO is increased which results in more sensitivity to the decreased amount of light.

Together, these three factors result in whether or not the picture is properly exposed. A good photographer understands these factors and the effects that they have on the final image. He will use this knowledge and take care to ensure the proper settings are utilized to produce exactly what he wants before he ever presses the shutter release button.
