How To Find An Honest Mechanic In Los Angeles

I was waxing nostalgic about the good old days recently and was thinking about my teen years. I spent much more time thinking about, and racing cars, than school. My first muscle car was a dark blue Ford Torino 390 cubes with four on the floor. Man did I think I was hot. I could fill my tank for about $10.

Sunday was race day, and every weekday and Saturdays, those of us who raced spent most of the time tweaking our engines, when we weren't playing a lousy version of "House Of The Rising Sun" in our garage with our very bad bands. I would head outside my hometown of Hattiesburg, Ms and race that Torino down the quarter-mile track at Hub City Raceway. I'll never forget their radio ads with the announcer yelling "Sunday, Sunday, Sundayyyyyyyyyyyy!", with each Sunday getting louder and louder.

The question always arose among fellow racers, "Who was the best mechanic in town". Since that time, I sold or wrecked and/or rebuilt about seven other race cars, probably my fastest being white Pontiac Tras-Am with a 454 cubic inch engine in it. It was the second year they came out and Pontiac only made them in that color. My shelf was aligned with trophies, thanks to the Pontiac/Chrysler Motor Company and my quick reflexes at reading rpm's and shifting.

Many years have passed since my days of youth, yet I still seek out the best mechanic. I now live in Los Angeles, and I accidentally stumbled across him, merely by accident. Not only was he the best but the most honest.

I had just bought a nice used four cylinder sedan, drove it across the country, and right when I entered L.A. county I smelled smoke, and, noticed the clutch slipping. I knew from my younger days, "this might be a good thing.

AAA towed it to a recommended man of whom I'd never heard, named Vladimir Morsach, a Russian Immigrant now in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. He knew exactly what the problem was and quoted me several hundred dollars lessthan the mechanic on the other side of town, in Woodland Hills where the car sat on the curb until the AAA friendly driver picked it up within minutes and took it away.

To my surprise, a call came from Vladimir the very next day and he said, "You may pick up your car. It's fine."

So off to Vlad's I went with a friend. I still had my out of state checks as I'd just moved from Arkansas, and since there had been some unauthorized charges on my Mastercard, I had canceled it and could not use it. He had to take my word that the check was good. Vlad was trusting and compassionate. He took my check. I was astounded. This was not the usual modus operandi of Business L.A.

So ironically, the best mechanic, at least my choice, in America, is not even a native-born American. But don't let that fool you. He fixed it as professionally and courteously as anyone with which you could hope to deal.

In addition, he said, if there was anything else wrong with the car, he would let me know before fixing it. I thought "Uh oh...what is coming next", based on my experience with so many mechanics with which I'd worked in the past. He called me again to let me know it was only the clutch. Now that is honesty, and certainly worth driving a few miles (or in my case having it towed, to get it fixed better, cheaper, and from a very nice person, Vladimir Morsach). Welcome to America, Vlad! We are very glad you are here!

I simply am a very happy customer and glad to know he is so nearby. Since that time I've talked to others who have had similar experiences with this engine-magician. I have a feeling you will too. What that means is that carrying cards on your person to avoid sending them through the X-ray machine exposes them to greater risk. It is often said that resolution is the most important factor in image quality. This one is not even close, it's lenses, hands down. That's why DSLR cameras with removable lenses are so highly valued, and why professionals spend so much more on lenses than on cameras. Even a single high-quality lens can cost more than the camera body. Poor quality lenses can impose many problems, from blur and distortion to color flaws and darkening of the image edge, that high resolution cannot hope to compensate for. I'd definitely rather have a 6 mega pixel SLR camera than an 8 Mega pixel compact. Dynamic range is the scale of light tonality from darkest to brightest in an image. The greater the dynamic range to start the more versatility you have with a photograph in post captures. Cameras at ISO 100 have a dynamic range of about 446:1. That means the digital image captures and delivers an image made from 8.8 stops of brightness. Where you capture a wider dynamic range, you have more to work with. Digital cameras provide the user the ability to change many camera exposure settings to brighten or lighten a photograph. Exposure settings such as White Balance, exposure compensation and saturation are limited in their ability to represent a photograph by the quality of raw capture provided. Many cameras now allow one to capture in RAW and in JPEG to provide one immediate true color representation of JPEG while archiving the maximum amount of material in RAW. Digital cameras increase our ability to edit more tonal characteristics of RAW files with a variety of sophisticated user-friendly software. A 6 mega pixel cameras may have sophisticated lenses and a sensor that provides 35 mm coverage with 8 to 10 mega pixel quality. The sensor and lens dramatically affect the capture quality of your camera, mega pixel or not

In terms of the ISO of your digital camera, it is talking about how sensitive your camera is to lighting. You need to know that the higher the ISO on a camera, the better for darker conditions. I am amazed every time that she has a guest on the show because i see that it opens my eyes to learning more about people and topics that I would never normally think about.

I grew up in the generation where talk shows meant a lot to people and that everyone knew of a talk show besides oprah. There was the Phil Donohue show and the Ricky Lake show and so many other talk shows. I watched so many talk shows that I failed to keep up with it all. I just wonder what will happen one day when Oprah decides to go off the air. A large part of my life has been looking forward to watching the Oprah Winfrey show each day. Do you know the secret formula of F Stops, Shutter Speeds and ISO?

It's a fact that the interplay of F Stop, Shutter Speed, and Focal length of your lens is crucial to the final photographic image you create. Yet, it is surprising to find out how few photographers really understand the interaction among these three factors.

Before we discuss how the parts fit together, we will first describe each separate factor.

F-stops

While it is a little joke we all make, they are actually named after their inventor whose name began with an "F".

The F stops refer to the setting on the diaphragm of the lens, controlling the amount of light that the lens gathers.

Shutter speed

Film cameras utilized a variety of types of shutters that controlled the amount of light that hit the film by controlling the length of time the light was allowed in. Today the same principle applies, but with digital cameras the light hits the "Digital Image Capture" component in the camera.

ISO

When film was used, a standard was needed to determine how much or how little light is necessary to create an image on the film. Various "speeds" of films were produced which differed in their ability to capture light. The term for that standard was ASA, from American Standards Association. A new term, ISO (International Standards Association), became popular a few years ago.

Even though we don't use film anymore, we do have the ability to set a "film speed" in our new digital cameras. My understanding of the particulars is that it is actually an electronic change to the DCD (my own term, there are CCD's and other chips, but for this article their names are not important)

Later in this article we will discuss the use of the ISO to attain a particular result.

Focal length of Lenses

What we will do in this article is show you how all of these elements come together to achieve desired effects depending on requirements of the assignment.

EXAMPLE 1

We are outside- bright and sunny.

The subject is far away, and we will use a long telephoto lens to capture the image.

We will hand hold the camera. No tripod.

We need a fast shutter speed to keep the camera from shaking. You can't totally depend on "stabilizer" lenses.

Setting ISO to 400 will usually allow Shutter Speed of 500-1000 with F Stop at F11 to F15.

In this next example, you might have problems taking pictures of your subject.

EXAMPLE 2

We are outside, cloudy, not very bright.

We want to use a long, telephoto lens to capture a subject far away.

We will hand hold the camera. No tripod.

We need a fast shutter speed to keep the camera from shaking. You can't totally depend on "stabilizer" lenses.

Now you have to make choices-

a. if you want to maintain your shutter speed, you could increase the ISO.

b. reducing the F Stop (opening the lens) will also reduce the amount of area that is in focus (Depth of Field).

It's starting to get a bit complicated, so we'll explain how these elements relate to each other.

Increasing or decreasing F Stop one full stop would be 5.6 to 8, or 2.8 to 4, or vice versa.

If you increase shutter speed from 1/125 of a second, to 1/250th of a second, or from 1/1000th of a second to 1/2000th of a second, you reduce the amount of light to your film or chip by one half, and if you decrease shutter speed from 1/250 second to 1/125 second, or 1/2000 second to 1/1000 second, you double the amount of light getting to the film or chip.

Equation: If you increase your F Stop from F8 to F11 you "Lose" one full stop of light.

Increasing shutter speed from 1/500 to 1/1000th of a second results in "losing" one full stop of light.

If you "Double" your ISO from 400 to 800 or 800 to 1600, you gain one full "Stop" of light.

Important note: "Stops of Light" is the terminology we use whether we are discussing the effects of working with ISO, F Stops, or Shutter Speeds.

Relationships Between Elements

Each of these elements can be used to control the camera settings. Control Depth of Field (amount of area in focus). Control movement, stop movement, allow movement to create effects. Use ISO for controlling amount of light.

In Real Situations

If you have your lens set at F8 and 250th of a second Shutter Speed and you need to open your lens to reduce your Depth of Filed, for the purpose of making your backgrounds out of focus, open your lens to F4, and increase your Shutter Speed to 1000.

In this example you opened your lens 2 stops, as well as increasing your Shutter Speed to 1000. From 250 to 500 doubled the Shutter Speed, then from 500 to 1000 doubled the Shutter Speed again.

If in the above scenario you were using an ISO of 800, you could reduce the ISO to 400, thus reducing the light by which would allow you to only increase your shutter speed once (double), from 250 to 500.

If you are using your camera on the automated "Program" setting, you are not taking full advantage of the adjustable controls of F Stop, ISO, and Shutter Speed that you can combine to unleash your creativity.

Your creativity will take a quantum leap if you learn all that these settings can do.

At various times I have been thought of as a critic of "Photojournalistic Style" photographers. Believe me, I have nothing against them or any other "Professional" photographers who have not taken the time to learn the simple technical information I present here.

So many eager individuals, with a love of photography and some small successes, decide to jump into the business of Professional Photographer, before they know the basics of what it takes to create the beautiful pictures that become treasured records of their clients' life events.

If friends and family tell someone that they take great pictures, that they have a good eye, that's not enough of a qualification to succeed as a Professional Photographer. Are they creating the best images possible by just using their natural artistic or creative ability? Probably not. If we go to the barber, or the Dentist, or Physician, we expect expert treatment. As Professional Photographers, we should strive for expert achievement, too.

I have always owned dogs, but, recently I have learned, mainly from females influential in my life, the wonder and magic of cats and what they have to offer which is much. A lot of men are ware of cats, perhaps because "dog is man's best friend", which we learn from childhood, but, I've also learned, so can a cat. Though not always, a cat can be a bit more standoffish than a dog. Patience is required in cases like this. Many cats love their independence and one must "earn their trust". Once you have, many cats will follow you around like a dog. Of course, most dog owners know it is "love at first bite...of food". Whomever feeds them is their new mommy or daddy, whereas, with many cats, the first few months is spent trying to figure out what value is there in owning this feline anyway.

Cat ownership, after awhile proves to one that this animal is an amazing intelligent creature, and can be just as loyal if not more so than a dog. Of the many cats I've owned, it has not taken more than a few days for them to want to curl up in my lap and rub its head continuously in a loving way and of course sleep in my bed with me.

Many of us struggle with health issues. A cat can be a wonderful therapist, doctor, or other type healer. Many people are unable to own dogs for various reasons, from apartment policies to travel, whereas a cat can be left alone for much longer and be ok. Cat ownership has been medical proven to help everything from high blood pressure to depression to even severe anxiety. Like dogs, cats have an amazing sixth sense, of how you are feeling. Unconditional love eventually evolves from most domestic cats given time. Patience can be the key. Some cats exhibit it right away. Some ask us to earn it.

With this in mind, cats, like dogs, make the world a much better place. Except for babies, and even babies have "their conditions"; really only domestic animals such as dogs and cats can teach us what unconditional love. I was very skeptical of all this upon learning the importance of animal care. I had read a lot but still did not believe the statistics much less the testimonials. Then I tried it, owning both dogs and cats for many years.

It is easy to say to oneself, "I haven't noticed any positive changes in myself". But it doesn't matter. They have already happened. Dog and cat ownership and care offer us the same paradigm shift of behavior that a newborn baby does. It offers us a chance to redirect much of our energies into a living loving creature that is there for us all the time. Yes we are there for it too, but not all the time. It does not care. If you give it a little attention, love and affection, it will give back a thousand fold.
