Amy Winehouse, born September 14th 1983, is an incredibly exciting vocalist, with talent to see her grow old doing the thing she loves the most. Despite her rollercoaster career, here are some facts you might want to know.
She was born in Southgate, London. The family were all Jewish Jazz musicians. So you could say that music was a part of her life from childbirth. When she was ten years old she started a rap band called Sweet n Sour and then went on to attend a theatre school but she didn't do too well, apparently getting her nose pierced. Along with some fellow students she later appeared on "The Fast Show" in 1997.
After tinkering with her brothers guitar, Amy was given her first guitar at the age of Thirteen and became obsessed with it - writing songs, dabbling in drugs and eventually dropping out of school a year later. She went on to do well however, winning an Ivor Novello Award in 2004 for her song "Stronger than me" which came off her first album called Frank, in 2003.
Sadly though, Amy grew to dislike listening to that album as it included some songs her bosses included which she did not like at all.
In a shock twist to her Jazz influenced work, Amy added focus to her work based on the girls and women of the 1950's and 1960's.
She later met Mark Ronson and created her next Album in just 6 months, after a previous 18 months yielded nothing.
Since then Amy has gone from strength to strength, but has gained an unwanted reputation for her recent drug problems in 2007/2008.
Her second album went 5x platinum, doing incredibly well, but the drug misuse was starting to take over her life and various videos of her taking cocaine were found online.
Amy's career is likely to span another 10 to 20 years but only if she can control her drug issues.
